  • AIS

AIS transponders transmit a ship's position, identification, and other information about the ship. AIS was developed in the 1990s as a method of safety and collision avoidance. AIS transponders broadcast static, dynamic, and voyage information. Static and voyage information can be manually entered by the crew - like the IMO number, destination, type of ship, etc. As of December 2004, the IMO required AIS to be fitted aboard all ships 300 or more gross tonnage and all passenger ships.
